Job Readiness: Building Confidence
It was very exciting to partner with First Steps to support new mothers preparing to reintegrate into the workforce. We know that taking this leap into the unknown can feel overwhelming, so our workshop broke the process down into small, manageable steps. Participants gained practical tools and a renewed sense of confidence through hands-on learning in resumes, cover letters, and mock interviews.
Step 1: Resumes
For many first-time job seekers, it can be hard to see how their experiences matter. We showed participants that every skill counts, whether from babysitting, mowing lawns, volunteering, or the leadership and resilience developed through motherhood.
We worked on:
- Identifying transferable skills and reframing them as assets
- Understanding resume formats such as chronological, functional, and hybrid, and when to use them
- Tailoring resumes to each opportunity by highlighting keywords and relevance
- Polishing structure and layout for clarity, professionalism, and impact
Step 2: Cover Letters
Cover letters are like personal introductions (or a voicemail if you will) in the digital hiring world. While we no longer walk up to a company’s door to leave a message for the boss, a cover letter serves that same purpose. It opens the conversation, helps you stand out, and can even be the deciding factor in whether you are invited to an interview.
We focused on:
- Knowing when a cover letter matters and how to follow job application instructions carefully.
- Structuring letters with a clear opening, body, and closing.
- Framing gaps positively, such as time away for caregiving.
- Customising for the role and employer using keywords and relevant details.
- Refining tone and professionalism with editing strategies that build confidence.
We had a lot of engagement in steps 1 and 2; therefore, regretfully, we didn’t have enough time remaining to move on to step three. We instead followed up virtually with the participants, offering mock interviews virtually. The following is what a day-of step 3 would look like.
Step 3: Mock Interview
As the saying goes, “practice makes confident“. We focused on interview preparation, helping participants build confidence and practise presenting their best selves. Trust me, no one likes interviews, and companies are the ones who have to do it the most! By creating a safe space to rehearse, participants were able to approach the process with less fear and more assurance.
We prepared participants through:
- Common interview questions, including behavioural and situational, and how to interpret them.
- Nonverbal communication skills like body language, tone, and professional presence.
- Adapting to virtual interviews, turning challenges into opportunities.
- Roleplay and feedback sessions to build comfort and reduce nerves.
- Closing the interview strongly with thoughtful questions and follow-up strategies.

- A polished resume and cover letter tailored to their goals.
- First-hand interview experience with constructive feedback.
- A stronger sense of confidence, resilience, and community, knowing they are not alone on this journey.
