What is networking?

Networking – it’s like social media, but for building opportunities. You meet individuals with shared interests, explore their perspectives, and assess whether you want to keep in touch or even collaborate on a project. But beyond the surface, networking isn’t just about making connections; it’s also a key tool in enhancing financial literacy and setting yourself up for future success.

Why should you network? If you follow my site, I don’t need to tell you how hard it is to get ahead in life. Networking allows you to meet others who can inspire you, provide guidance, or even help you understand concepts like salary negotiation, budgeting for professional growth, or accessing resources. These are all components of financial literacy, and they often come from conversations with individuals who’ve walked similar paths and have valuable insights to share.

Let me share my experience. My networking event was an hour’s drive from my house. The email informed me that there would be students, alumni, and professionals from LinkedIn.

First – try to eliminate additional stressors before doing something for the first time. For example: don’t take your car to get its windshield replaced right before your networking event.

A quick internet search confirmed that I was not going to learn advanced ‘no make-up’ techniques and would have to stick with the tried and true: just the eyes and blemish coverage. I forgot to take off my blemish bandage before taking my pictures.

Second – Time management is crucial. If you’re from another city you should leave early! Don’t trust the GPS because it can not predict accidents.

Third – Prepare ahead. Arrogance meant that I did not look up how to network. Instead, I trusted in my natural ability to socialize. Additionally, seeing myself as the ever genius, I came up with the idea of ‘business stickers’ instead of business cards. The idea is that I can hand it out but if the person didn’t want to use it they can give it to their kid to play with instead of immediately trashing it. Plus side: I handed out two! Downside: I did it last minute so it was MS Paint made.

Last but not least, make certain you feel comfortable enough in your own skin to network. A phone call to someone you love or a quick treat can help calm the nerves. Otherwise, sometimes these events have wine.

Remember: it’s okay to start small – just showing up is a win.
